Wuthering Waves 2.0 Review: An Exhilarating and Bold New Chapter That Focuses on Story and the Player Experience

Wuthering Waves 2.0 is a reimagination and statement of what the game is and where it wants to go. Not too often do you see a live service game make significant shifts in one update with a key focus on the player experience. There’s a fundamental change in foundation that is reflected in the new characters, art design, story and open world. In my original review of the game, I believed that this team was as it’s best when it leaned more into its own unique art direction. This is evident in all aspects of the 2.0 update. Rinascita is a beautiful world filled with personality. It finally feels like this game has its own identity. This review will focus on 3 main areas of content: the story (non-spoiler), new featured resonator (Carlotta) and new gameplay features.

1. STORY
The 2.0 update brings with it moments of magic within the main story. It’s clear this team was set on refining it’s storytelling. There are numerous animated cutscenes throughout the journey with improvements in all aspects of execution and a high quality finish. They set the tone and feel of the update introducing new characters and incorporating them into the main quest much more seamlessly than in prior renditions. Art and character design match the new setting. The new cast of characters feel like a team that you are interested in learning more about. Some scenes are beautiful, intricate and exquisitely choreographed to showcase dramatic battles while telling a compelling narrative. In combination with the story, the overall encounter design in battles and story quests are much more interesting and match the context. In fact, my favorite quest in the game so far is in this patch. Nevertheless, it’s not all perfect. There are some scenes and dialogue that could be more concise and/or edited out to deliver a more impactful story. However, the standout feature of this update is how the story telling has evolved. Character development, along with plot and action scenes are all intertwined and able to captivate the audience. You have to experience it for yourself to truly understand. The finale is well worth it.

2. NEW RESONATOR: CARLOTTA
Carlotta is a glacio gun weilding resonator that packs a punch. Her overall gameplay and rotation are fun and will obliterate foes. As you execute her liberation, you can feel the impact of each shot. This is how a gun DPS should feel. As I’m still in the process of getting her to max level, she still feels powerful even against higher level enemies. There’s a lot to learn about her kit and many guides offer a lot of details. It can be a bit overwhelming, but in actual practice once you understand her rotation it’s actually quite simple to pull off and similar to other DPS units. By far she is one of the most fun resonators that have come out.

3. NEW GAMEPLAY FEATURES
It’s clear that the developer was focused on refining the player experience in this patch. Many of the changes and features significantly enhance the experience. These include the ability to synthesize material anywhere. On top of that, players now have the ability to convert material. This helps a lot when leveling up units. The open world has also seen improvements. The main focus has been allowing the player to get to difference places faster. This includes flight but also flying echos that you can hitch a ride on and the placement of various speed buffs throughout the map. There’s also a change in open world treasure crates. Certain locations now tell you to use your sensor to find a group of treasure crates that are all closely located. Allowing you to focus on these specific spots instead of wandering the entire map. In addition, sonance caskets now allow you to use your grappling hook to get to them faster and easier. Moreover, new rewards for exploration and a way to visually track your progress have been added to the game. Lastly, there are numerous new echos and echo sets. Some of the original 4 cost echos now have alternate nightmare versions with different buffs. This allows for new options to boost your characters.

All of these components make the open world experience more interesting and encourage players to explore. It’s a step in the right direction in open world design. However, there are still challenges to be addressed such as the long term grind for getting the best echos and the need for interesting/innovative endgame content that isn’t repetitive. In the end, the 2.0 update is a new chapter for the game that is genuinely exciting. It feels like the development team wanted to make a statement and this feels like a new game. I can not wait to see what this team brings to life in future updates. It’s apparent they are passionate and dedicated.
