Overall Impression
Ball x Pit is a roguelike action shooter and bullet hell that is incredibly easy to jump into and delightfully satisfying. A combination of different characters, power ups and levels that are challenging but fair make this an instant classic. The basic gameplay of purely destroying enemies is highly addictive. This is the type of game that reminds me of arcade classics with a modern roguelike twist. The graphics and gameplay loop match that nostalgic feel. The builds are also fun to play and you can see how different upgrades allow you to overcome certain sections of a stage that may have otherwise caused issues. Overall, this is an indie game that is bound to leave its mark in the genre and become an iconic classic.
Gameplay
The core action gameplay is fun and surprisingly addictive. You are mostly just destroying enemies but the constant action and retro arcade feel make it perfect for a roguelike. The base gameplay is simple: shooting balls at enemies. Damage can be increased with bounces and various power ups. Power ups come in an array of forms as new balls and also passive abilities. Certain power ups also allow you to fuse balls allowing room for even more combinations and unique features. New balls come with different ways to damage enemies, such as doing damage over time or setting off an attack that can hit all enemies in a row or column. Passives further boost your attacks with abilities, like being able to pass through enemies or increase your base movement speed. Overall the power ups are fun with interesting combinations.
The level of difficulty is challenging but fair. Enemies can attack you if they aren’t destroyed and reach the bottom of the screen. There is also a bullet hell component in that enemies and bosses can fire off an array of projectiles. Much of the difficulty and challenge is tied to you how you build a character during any run with different power ups.
The meta progression is tied to a city building simulator. After you die, you can then build certain structures or plant crops. Sending your workers to harvest (by shooting them) will allow you to collect resources and/or finish constructing a building, which can then provide bonuses to your base stats. It’s a clever progression tool as the harvest component of shooting your workers mimics the core gameplay. Overall its a straight forward gameplay loop with enough choice, challenge and customization that makes for really fun and exciting playthroughs.
Art, Design & Music
The art and design has a simple retro arcade aesthetic. It feels familiar while still being able to portray its own identity. The core design is a medieval gothic design with arcade cartoonish undead enemies and an array of heroes. The visual aesthetic has a charm to it that matches the overall vibe of the game and arcade feel. In addition, the music supports the overall vibe of a retro-like shooter. Instrumental tracks are upbeat and vibrant matching the tone and pacing of the gameplay. Altogether there’s been a lot of attention paid to the overall experience with a visual design and soundscape that compliments and enhances the quality of the game.
Challenges
The main challenge in this type of genre is the repetitive nature of a roguelike. Even with different characters and random builds you’re still essentially doing the same thing- killing enemies. It’s still fun and not necessarily a weakness of the game but more so an inherent element of games in this genre.
Another potential challenge is the variety of gameplay styles at least in the early game. Yes there are different characters and random power ups. But the power ups can still feel similar in that you aren’t necessarily destroying enemies in a way that feels completely different than another type of build or play style. It can all feel fun but also similar. This is just a first impressions so this may only pertain to the early game. None of the challenges here are major red flags. This is a well designed and executed indie title that deserves the spotlight.
Closing Thoughts
Ball x Pit is a roguelike action shooter that is easy to get into and extremely fun. The action combat feels spot on and the build and character choices allow you the freedom to experiment with different setups. The difficulty feels challenging but fair allowing a much wider audience to try out this title even if they aren’t a fan of this type of game. In the end, this is bound to be a genre defining title due to the high level of execution and satisfying gameplay loop. If you enjoy roguelike action games, this is definitely something you should have on you list of games to check out.
