Overall Impression
Whisper Mountain Outbreak (WMO) is a challenging roguelike coop action survival horror game that captures the essence of the genre. Drawing inspiration from early entries in the Resident Evil franchise, WMO does an excellent job of setting up tension and horror vibes through its game play, environments, and sound design. Staying true to the survival horror genre you have to make tough choices in what resources to carry and how you use them. Combat is relatively simple but challenging with a reasonable stamina system that allows bursts of activity for melee combat along with the thrill of gunplay. It’s a simple but very effective offering. It works well because it doesn’t hold your hand or tell you exactly what to do at any given moment.
Target Audience
Survival horror fans that enjoy a challenging experience will feel at home here. It draws heavily from games like Resident Evil so gamers that are familiar with that series will feel fairly comfortable here. Being a roguelike, it’s quite challenging and goes back to what it means to be a survival horror game— tense exploration with potential danger at every turn. Its primarily designed as a coop experience but it can be attempted solo. Most of this review is from a solo gameplay experience.
Gameplay
The base gameplay design is simple and that’s what makes it so effective. You start off by getting an objective for a level/map. Complete that objective to unlock more maps. Each map you come across there is a straightforward objective. For example, it may ask you to find an item. However, how you actually complete it is up to you. The game doesn’t hold your hand or tell you exactly what to do. This is refreshing and goes back to how games were designed before everything was labelled on a map or where the player was given big arrows or waypoints to direct them. This pairs well with a survival horror game where the tension and excitement comes from not knowing what to expect. Exploration then becomes both exciting and potentially dangerous. These qualities make the survival experience thrilling.
The base gameplay loop includes 3 core elements. This consists of a mix of exploration, puzzle solving and combat. What makes the core gameplay loop interesting is that at any moment there can be a potentially dangerous encounter. Enemies can pop up from windows or drop from the ceiling or come from another surrounding room. This tension makes everything you do matter. You have to explore to find clues and solve puzzles so you are never just sitting in one place. On top of that there are certain instances when a zombie horde will come and attack you. These encounters can be intense and push your limits to manage your stamina, use your gun or environmental objects (like exploding containers). These fights are also fun and rewarding as you learn how to handle a large mob of enemies that seem overwhelming when you first experience it. This also puts pressure on you to complete the objectives and be efficient with your time and resources. In the end, it’s a simple gameplay loop that works for the genre.
There are also some basic RPG type elements. This comes in the form of having the ability to upgrade stats and craft items. Resources for this come from your exploration of a map and upon successful completion of them. The upgrades are meaningful and can have a significant impact on your experience. For example, you can reduce stamina cost, increase your health or expand your inventory space. The simple RPG elements add choice and some depth to how you develop your character.
Lastly, there are different types of character classes. When you start a new campaign you’ll be given a random choice among three classes. The classes vary with simple perks but can help you form a balanced team. Some perks can also be game changing. For example, the fire fighter that starts with an axe. It’s a simple perk but having the axe in the early game can transform your melee combat and ability to deal with a horde thereby allowing you to survive and progress further in the game.
Art & Design
The overall aesthetic is a retro pixel art style. It’s simple but works surprisingly well since it draws heavily on games in the genre that go for more realism. The different overall aesthetic helps it stand apart despite its familiar references. Due to this dynamic, it works fairly well for the survival genre. It’s nice to see a resurgence of this art style as its form creates its own unique representation on characters and settings that allow a developer to realize the world of their game. It’s no longer just a technological restraint but an artistic choice.
Challenges
The main challenge of the game is having to start and play the same initial stage. This is inherent in a roguelike game but it still represents a challenge. When you are just starting out, it’s not as much of an issue as you are still learning about the map and puzzles. But as you understand the map, it can become more tedious to keep repeating the exact same section over and over just to get back to a map you last died on.
Being in early access there is no true meta progression system in place yet. This adds to the overall repetitive and potentially tedious nature of restarting. In most roguelikes, you can slowly make progress via meta progression, which makes you slightly more powerful or able to survive a bit more each time. Although there are ways to level up certain attributes, these upgrades only apply during a single run and do not persist long term. Of course this is still early access so there are opportunities to make adjustments and implement additional systems.
Closing Thoughts
Whisper Mountain Outbreak is an intriguing and fun survival horror game that makes exploration, combat and puzzle solving tense and exhilarating. The core of the gameplay loop works well and there’s a lot of potential for this game to gain a cult following. If certain elements, like a meta progression system can be implemented successfully, it’s a title that should be on any survival fans wish list.
