First Impression: Conquest Tactics Realm of Sin – A Strategic Tabletop Inspired Tactics Game

Overall Impression

Conquest Tactics is a tactical strategy game that draws inspiration from games like Chess. There’s a heavy emphasis on unit placement while rewarding those that also plan their moves in advance. It’s very straight forward in its offering featuring battles, and a minimal storyline mixed with some RPG and rogue-like elements.

Target Audience

Those that enjoy the combat experience will resonate with this title the most. There does not appear to be too many extra features and the story is also quite minimal. However, if you do enjoy the combat experience, this could be a game to put on your list to try out.

Gameplay

The main gameplay revolves around defeating your opponent’s flag. This is accomplished by taking turns and placing units on a hexagonal grid. Each unit has a specific cost and during each turn your resource to place units on the grid is also capped. This means you’ll need to be strategic in where you place those units and which ones you decide to use. Units come with certain attributes that allow them to attack or block in specific  directions, which can also be rotated. Some units also come with special abilities that trigger when they are placed. During a turn, you will place units until you run out of resource. The opponent will also do the same. A match is won by attacking an enemy’s flag and depleting it to zero.

The basic setup of the units on a grid allows for strategic combat decisions. For example, you can play units in a way to prevent damage to another allied unit or to automatically attack an enemy if they are placed in a specific spot. You can also move the same unit more than once in a turn as long as you have enough resource. The starting resource is limited but increases with turn count. You also only have access to a set of units in any turn with more becoming available as turns progress. If a unit dies it will also recycle and become available later. Altogether, this allows for a variety of strategic decisions during combat.

The game also includes some roguelike and RPG elements. Between combat encounters you will traverse a map that allows for different scenarios. This includes things like stopping by a shop to purchase items or gain buffs. Items allow you to apply certain effects during combat while buffs may alter or affect a unit(s), such as giving them new abilities. There are also different starting hero’s to unlock that provide access to different units and playstyles/strategies.

Art & Design

The art design falls within a 2D medieval fantasy environment. The 2D art is adequate for the style of the game. Battles take place on a hexagonal grid that is quite nice making it feeling like a digital board game. There’s nothing too fancy or unique, but overall there’s still a nice and pleasant aesthetic to the art and design.

Challenges

The main challenge in the game is that most encounters feel very similar. Once you understand the core mechanics, even though there can be a lot of strategy at play, you can also find simple ways to win by focusing on just doing damage to the enemy flag. The overall depth of strategy doesn’t feel as deep as other tactical games. Perhaps, this evolves as you get further into the game and unlock additional items or buffs. However, at the core, there’s a lot of potential here, but it also feels like the game is more in an early access stage of development than a final offering.

Closing Thoughts

Conquest Tactics is an interesting tactical strategy game with an emphasis on unit placement. The core gameplay can be fun but each encounter can also feel very similar. The overall game feels more like it is in an early access phase that needs a bit further development in terms of strategic depth and gameplay features. If you do enjoy the combat, this could be something you may want to check out.
