First Impression: Replaced – An Immersive Retro Futuristic Cyberpunk Action Platformer

Overall Impression

Not too often do you come across something that is distinct and special. Replaced is one of those games. It is a retro futuristic action platformer set in a cyberpunk world. Immediately as you enter the game it feels different. The ambient sound of rain against the buildings and streets sets the tone. The landscape is artistically crafted with intricate details. The way the light hits surfaces, reflects and glares pulls you into this setting. I did not expect this from a 2.5D pixel art style game. Replaced sets an intriguing atmospheric tone that invites us to go farther into its world to uncover its secrets.

Target Audience

Fans of action platformers that enjoy the pixel art style should keep this on their watchlist. It’s the most compelling game in this type of genre and art style that I have come across in a while. It feels distinct and the immersive qualities are well executed. It’s worth checking out for fans of this genre and art style.

Gameplay

This is an action platformer. It doesn’t hold your hand with tutorials. Instead it allows you to explore and experiment. There’s nothing crazy in terms of what it asks you to do, but it’s surprising at first because so few games trust their players to be able to figure out how to progress without a tutorial system. The result is a rewarding journey that asks the player to stay vigilant of the environment and just explore. This makes navigating through a level meaningful because the solution wasn’t just handed to you.

The core gameplay loop revolves around platforming and combat. It’s a simple loop but works well given the exceptionally intricate level design. You’ll be asked to traverse levels in simple but clever ways. You’ll parkour through the streets that allow you to see the level in different ways than you initially perceived it. You’ll avoid detection by being stealthy and use objects in the world to stay hidden. Altogether, the core platforming is inventive and it’s refreshing that the developers have allowed room for discovery.

On the combat side you’ll also be challenged. The controls are relatively simple and even from the start you’ll face off against much larger groups of enemies that will test and train you to fight. Combat feels weighty as you crush enemies with your melee weapon, dodge, counter attack or finish them with your gun. Once you grasp each aspect of combat and how to use your skills you feel like an absolute badass moving across the screen and destroying your enemies. Encounters are challenging making fights feel significant as you have to pay attention on who to prioritize in fights that often see you heavily outnumbered.

Narrative

The game takes place in an alternate 80s version of America in the aftermath of a  nuclear catastrophe. The main protagonist is an AI trapped in a human body that navigates a world dominated by the Phoenix Corporation. The opening sequence has a somber tone as you navigate the streets of Phoenix City. By the end of the first chapter the story takes a more casual tone, not taking itself too seriously and indulging more in a light hearted and even wacky tone. It’s too early to say what the overall narrative will be like. Overall, it seems to be a mix of dramatic and more fun casual encounters to lighten the mood.

Art & Design

What sets Replaced apart is the exceptional art design. The art is striking and bold. At times it makes you forget about its style and pulls you into the experience. This is the quality that completely took me by surprise. When we think about immersive experiences we usually think about a photo realistic environment. However, incredible art design paired with an atmospheric soundscape and tone are powerful. The level designs are interesting with intricate details that are both artistic and distinct. There’s so much to absorb and admire in this vision of a city in the aftermath of tragedy. The art design really sets this title apart creating a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Challenges

One of the potential challenges is will combat just feel repetitive? The core combat feels weighty and you can be an absolute badass. It’s fairly easy to understand the mechanics. But once you’ve picked apart a few mobs  it can get repetitive. Will combat evolve throughout the experience? It’s too early to know as the demo only provides a small glimpse.

The other significant factor is the overall narrative. There’s only a few snippets that we are exposed to in the opening sequence. There’s nothing that’s too captivating or unique in the narrative so far. I’m not sure if overall it’ll just take a backseat to the platforming and combat or will it be one of the driving forces that makes the game standout? However, the core foundation of what this game offers is unique and well executed.

Closing Thoughts

Replaced is an action platformer set in a cyberpunk world.  It sets an immersive and atmospheric tone through its level and sound design. Combat is solid with a beat’em up style that has you destroying mobs once you get the hang of each combat mechanic. There are questions as to whether the fight mechanics are deep enough to not just feel repetitive and if the narrative will come together in a captivating way. It’s too early to know. What we do know is that the core offering here is distinct. Not too often do we come across something as promising as Replaced. If you enjoy the art style and premise, this is a title to keep an eye on.
