First Impression: In Falsus – An Anime Style Narrative Driven Rhythm Game with a Distinct Mouse and Keyboard System

Overall Impression

In Falsus is an anime inspired rhythm game. It uses a keyboard and mouse setup to provide a distinct rhythm experience. Each song is considered a type of battle and each mistake reduces your health total. Different characters and cards allow you to alter stats in order to  survive. Musical tracks are mostly electronic dance songs. The full release will feature 70 songs with 40 of them being original tracks. Overall the gameplay is different compared to other rhythm games and for those that do enjoy the controls this may be a title to keep on your watchlist. This title is slated to release sometime in 2026.

Target Audience

Fans of rhythm games that are looking for a slightly different experience may want to check this out. The mouse and keyboard inputs give the game a different feel compared to other rhythm games. You are activating keys, but you’re also following certain defined tracks and ‘sliding’ with the mouse. It may or may not resonate with you depending on if you enjoy this type of setup.

Gameplay & Music

The core gameplay loop is what you expect from a rhythm game with a slightly different feel. This game uses a keyboard and mouse input with a mix of traditional input keys and also sliding and tracking with the mouse. At any given time there are usually 3 lanes out of 4 that are active with 2 end lanes (left and right end) that may also have special notes. This is critical as it is much easier to just focus on 3 key inputs at any give time. Notes can be activated in any of these sections and the sections may alternate to new lanes on more challenging songs. The mouse inputs are a mix of following a defined track and not going outside the defined area as well as flicking/sliding where you have to swipe left or right. While you are using the mouse inputs, since they are all movement based you get to vibe with the song and just enjoy the experience. It’s not as intense as other rhythm experiences can be on easier difficulty settings. Overall, once you get use to the 3 active lanes concept it’s a pretty fun experience.

There are also some RPG elements in the games systems. Each song is like a battle. As you make mistakes you lose life. As you recover and perform well, you can restore it. Characters also come with unique traits and there is also a card system to alter stats in order to help you survive. The demo doesn’t expand too much on these concepts so we’ll have to see in the full release how this is all implemented.

Music in the game is energetic and upbeat. The full release will feature 70 tracks with 40 being original. The featured tracks so far appear to be in the electronic dance category. The tracks that I have heard are fun overall but I haven’t come across a signature game defining track yet. But this is just a preview and perhaps in the full release there will be some bangers.

Narrative

This title is one that appears will have a narrative focus. We get a small glimpse of that in the demo; however,  we don’t really know if it’ll be intriguing or well executed until full release.

Art & Design

The game has a colourful and bright anime aesthetic. In addition, the rhythm gameplay visuals have a futuristic neon vibe that matches the genre. Character design is what you would expect in this type of style. Although there’s nothing uniquely distinct about the designs, overall the visual elements are well executed.

Challenges

The main challenge in the game is just getting use to the controls and setup. If you are accustomed to using a controller in most games, it will take some time to get use to the mouse and keyboard setup. It also helps to know that only 3 lanes are active at a time so you don’t necessarily need to worry about positioning to hit every possible key. It takes some getting use to the setup, but it can be a fun experience for those that like the control setup.

Closing Thoughts

In Falsus is a fun rhythm game with a unique feel especially in the rhythm genre. For those that enjoy the mouse and keyboard setup this may be a title to keep on your watch list.
