Overall Impression
Pocket Legend is a turned based roguelike deckbuilder wrapped into an inventory management system. It brings together unique elements within each format to create an interesting experience. It incorporates elements of being efficient in inventory management with attack, defense and buffs in the form of cards. Everything comes together in a distinct way making it standout in the turn based genre.
Target Audience
The main target audience are those that enjoy a unique turned based combat experience. In particular, players that like both the inventory management and deck builder elements. It may also appeal to those that are just looking for something a bit different compared to other turned based or deckbuilder games on the market.
Gameplay
The core gameplay loop revolves around a turned based combat system. There are 5 main types of cards. This includes: weapon (deal damage), armor (mitigate damage), skill (various effects like temporary buffs), binding (continuous effects) and obstruction (usually created by enemies to disrupt your inventory space). A turn in combat generally consists of selecting a weapon or armor or any skill to place into your inventory and also deciding if you should activate them. You’ll deal damage to the enemy and/or apply armor. During your turn you can see a preview of what the enemy will do so you can prepare properly. Turns alternate between player and enemy until one of them is defeated. Some of the strategic aspects that come into play involve deciding what to put into your inventory, when to activate it and when to go for damage or defense. This is a roguelike so health is critical and doesn’t automatically refill after an encounter. There are locations on the map that do have rest spots to regain health. In addition, there are items that you can acquire to restore it as well. The main gameplay loop revolves around exploring sections of a map that consist of combat encounters, rest spots, areas that provide items or upgrades and/or elite boss encounters. Altogether, there’s an interesting mix of systems that keep encounters fun.
Narrative
There’s a basic text based narrative in this game. There’s only a small snippet of story in the initial part of the game. It reminds me of more classic RPGs from back in the day of the NES era. The story is simple but it matches the type of game this is, which focuses primarily on the turn based gameplay. The narrative is there but it’s more to setup the context of the world and the conflicts that exist within it.
Art & Design
The art style has a 2D animated aesthetic. The characters and world are bright and vibrant and compliments the world and gameplay. The UI allows for the Information to be clear and for the most part making the game easy to pick up and learn. There’s also a nice polish to the visuals and animation that make it feel professional and high quality.
Challenges
One of the challenges of the game is that overall it feels like a fairly simple and straight forward adventure. This comes across in the fight encounters and the overall nature of basic map exploration. Regarding combat, although there are different strategic options you don’t necessarily get the opportunity to really be challenged in the early stages. Fights can also start to feel very similar as the generic encounters although allow you a certain degree of choice still feel more restrictive. The elite encounters are more interesting with unique mechanics that you do have to pay attention to in order to defeat the boss. Regarding the map exploration, each area you explore seems to follow a similar pattern of combat, rest, item upgrades and a boss encounter. There’s nothing inherently problematic in what it is offering, but if you are looking for a game with more depth or features this may not be the type of game for you.
Closing Thoughts
Pocket Legend is a unique twist on a turned based combat system that incorporates elements of a rogue like into an inventory management and deck builder game. The core gameplay mechanics are fun; however, certain regular encounters can start to feel repetitive and less challenging especially in the early segments of the game. If you do enjoy the inventory management or deck builder genre, this may be a title to put on your list of games to check out.
