Overall Impression
Terrinoth Heroes of Descent is a CRPG based on the original tabletop game. It’s turn based combat is quite fun making use of environmental layout and synergies between skills to pull off satisfying combinations. It’s combat system is quite easy to learn for veterans or players new to the genre making it accessible to most players.
Target Audience
Gamers that enjoy the CRPG genre especially the strategic combat aspects of it may want to check it this out. It has a fairly easy to learn system that allows for satisfying and challenging encounters. The narrative aspects aren’t as developed as the combat elements. The narration is on par with what you would expect in other similar titles. Nevertheless some aspects of dialogue are more plot based and at times it can come off as wacky or too dramatic with over the top lines. It is something to be aware of as it may or may not resonate with you as a player.
Gameplay
The core gameplay loop revolves around exploring dungeons. Several aspects of this make it interesting. There are secrets or alternate routes that can be explored with many of them being optional. This allows room for exploration if you want without feeling forced into it. Also once the basic mechanics are understood and you of how to manipulate the environment you are free to explore and discover without much hand holding. The general map exploration is interesting due to these elements.
Combat encounters feel fair but challenging. This is always refreshing as it takes the right amount of tuning to execute. There is enough challenge to allow room for mistakes but it also asks the player to consider each of their choices on every turn allowing for a focus on strategy over brute force. Fights can be easily lost but also won by making different choices.
There are also interesting synergies between skills. This allows for fun combos between party members. For example, one of the characters can apply a debuff on enemies that will trigger AOE damage if hit by fire. Other characters on the team can then apply fire skills to wipe out an entire pack of enemies. It’s quite satisfying to apply these type of skill combinations during combat.
The combat system is simple to learn. Each unit gets 3 action points per turn. This can be spent to move or apply skills. For example, If you need more movement you can spend more action points (AP) towards it or if you want to do more damage you ca. Skills of characters are also fairly easy to grasp. Some signature skills have a cool down focus on using your AP for attacks. Signature abilities usually come with a short cooldown while other common skills can be used each turn. This simplified system makes it very easy to learn and also allows you to have meaningful and flexible options at your disposal during any turn.
Art & Design
The overall art direction leans towards an animated stylized aesthetic. It’s bright and vibrant and does fall in line with what you would expect in a CRPG. Dungeons are interesting to explore and usually contain multiple optional pathways. The UI and interface is also easy to understand and navigate. Altogether the art and design are quite well done and fit nicely within the CRPG fantasy genre.
Challenges
One of the challenges of the game comes down to if the narrative resonates with you or not. Certain aspects of the narrative, such as those that are portrayed during a cutscene seem to match the overall tone of the game. However, much of the dialogue focuses on plot and as such include lines that no one would actually say. It’s one of the weaker aspects of the experience that may or may not resonate with the player. I do wish that they type of titles would examine their narrative a little more closely especially in a CRPG experience as it can transform the journey and take a good experience into something exceptional.
Closing Thoughts
Terrinoth Heroes of Descent is a fun CRPG experience. It establishes an easy to understand combat system and includes interesting skill synergies that make for satisfying combat encounters. The narrative style and content may or may not connect with players. It depends on your own personal preferences and how much the narrative matters to you. If you are new to the genre or a veteran looking for something fun, this may be a title to put on your wish list.
