This iteration of the game in the series involves a soul mechanic. This allows the main protagonist, Soma the ability to acquire the skill of enemies. This creates a diverse toolkit of abilities that can be utilized for different encounters. The classic mix of challenging gameplay and free form exploration still holds up to this day. Target Audience
The core target audience are fans of classic metroidvanias that enjoy the exploration, RPG mechanics and challenging gameplay. Playing it in the original format means that reloading from death can be slow. However, this title is also available through collections on Steam for PC. The peak of the series may still rest with Castlevania Symphony of the Night; however Dawn of Sorrow is still a fun and different experience for those looking for other classic metroidvania’s to check out. The unique soul mechanic makes for a different experience through its playthrough.
Gameplay
The core gameplay loop of exploration and combat is satisfying. This is due to the nature how of this is all setup. For exploration you are not exactly told where to go. Most modern games have steered away from this wanting to avoid confusing or frustrating players. However, by holding the players hand too much it takes away the joy of discovery and the satisfaction of figuring things out on the go and overcoming adversity. The basic joy of just exploring to see where you can go gets at the heart of human curiosity. This game allows that freedom of exploration and rewards you with items and the joy of discovering all the little secrets in the map. It’s such a simple premise, but it has an incredibly powerful impact on the overall game design.
Combat is challenging and inventive. The soul mechanic of gaining a skill of an enemy allows the player to develop a diverse toolkit to deal with different encounters. Each time you defeat an enemy there is a chance to acquire their soul. This makes coming across new enemies interesting and it allows you to experiment with different skills throughout your playthrough.
Enemy design is excellent. Regular encounters are potentially deadly throughout. This means that the player has to stay focused throughout and be careful in how the move and which fights they engage in. Survival means learning each enemies’ attack pattern and how to dispatch them effectively. Boss encounters are also unique with different mechanics. The key to overcoming most encounters is understanding their unique move and attack patterns. Fights can be very challenging upon your first go but become increasingly more manageable once the core mechanics are understood.
Art & Design
The art and design represents some of the peak of the classic pixel aesthetic for the genre. There’s a mix of 2D anime cutscenes and gothic fantasy pixel art for the in-game visuals. The visual design is well executed for the genre and overall style. In addition, playing on a Nintendo DS or 3DS allows the second screen to display the map at all times. It’s a nice feature that makes the exploration easier to navigate. Altogether, this is the peak of the classic metroidvania genre in terms of art and style.
Challenges
This is an era of gaming that presented a suitable challenge. In many modern games you can easily breeze through. However, it wasn’t always this way. Classic games generally present a noticeable challenge asking the player to really learn the game and develop their skills and fine tune their approach and strategy. This is the case with Dawn of Sorrow. The main challenge is understanding that this is a traditional metroidvania. It doesn’t hold your hand. Instead you are free to explore and you may come up against a wall in certain boss fights. Knowing what type of game you enjoy is key. Fans of old school metroidvanias that embrace exploration and challenging fights will feel at home here. However, this type of open ended exploration and challenge in fights may not necessarily be for everyone.
Closing Thoughts
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is a classic metroidvania with an intriguing soul system and all the features of a great game in the genre. The player is left free to explore the environment without much guidance making progression feel meaningful. Combat is challenging and the soul system gives the player a variety of tools at their disposal for an array of encounters. For any fan of the genre or even those new to it that enjoy the pixel art and challenge of these type of games this is a title you should check out.
