Gameplay
The core gameplay is a visceral and fun beat ’em up. You can pull off a string of combos via basic inputs in the form of punch, kick and special attacks. You can also bounce enemies off walls to extend combinations. Furthermore, there is a parry that can counter enemy attacks, which comes in handy especially when there are multiple attacks from different directions. As with most games in this genre general combat is challenging. Each bit of damage you take makes a difference in how far you end up going in the game. This makes every fight a threat. Boss encounters are also usually designed with a certain mechanic making fights challenging throughout the experience. Altogether, the core combat system is easy to pick up but challenging to master.
Art & Design
Visual design is one of the standout features of the game. It has a graphic novel aesthetic with strong well defined silhouettes combined with the gritty urban art style of games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight. On top of that animations give a brutal and impactful feel to combat. This is one of the best looking games in the genre.
Challenges
The main challenge in the game is the repetitive nature of a beat ’em up. Combat is interesting but can also feel very repetitive once you get the hang of the basic moves even though you can string together various combinations. Overall the game is fairly straight forward in its offering so it can feel a bit lacking in depth for those that are looking for something more.
